Microworlds: Investigate the Very Small

A whole day devoted to things microscopic!

The Science Discovery Lab will be buzzing with activity as we explore an entire world of microscopic wonders. Using an array of magnifying instruments from hand lenses to compound microscopes, you can observe everything from the weave of a t-shirt to invertebrates in pond water, to the nuclei of your very own cheek cells. Discover a whole new world just hidden from the naked eye! Choose from:

10:30  Insects Up Close – use magnifying glasses and microscopes to study a diversity of insects. Discovery Lab. 

11:30  Seedy Science – explore the museum’s seed collection and use microscopes to look at seed adaptions. Discovery Lab.

12:30  Cells – use a light microscopes to see your very own cells! For adults and kids 9 and up. Discovery Lab. 

1:30  Microscopic Nature – head outside to collect plant samples to explore under the scopes. Science Park Pavilion. 

2:30  Pond Water Critters – use microscopes to look for all the hidden life in pond water. Discovery Lab.

3:30  Dissecting Lichen – use a light microscope to discover the hidden symbiosis of lichen. For adults and kids 9 and up. Discovery Lab.  

4:30  Empty Your Pockets – what hidden things are in your pockets? Examine man-made objects under the microscopes. Discovery Lab.
