Professional Development:Balance and Spinning Things

3:30 PM

Online Workshop for teachers of grades 4–8

Explore the two fundamental scientific principles of balance and spinning by making toys! Experiment with various materials to find out what makes a top spin well (or not) and create balance toys that appear to defy gravity. We’ll discuss ideas around center of gravity, mass, and the stability of spinning objects. This workshop is a collaboration with the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College and is specially designed to align with the science on display in the Cirque Mechanics performance 42FT—A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels.

The Montshire Museum of Science’s live webinar series offers teachers and homeschool educators opportunities for professional development in STEM education. These bite-sized online workshops are designed to provide exciting ways to invigorate your science classroom without having to travel to the Montshire.

This season, we’re focusing on incorporating engineering into your science curriculum. All workshops will review the NGSS engineering practices and how they support the content learning goals for specific units of study.

Audience: Teachers, Professional Development

Pre-Registration Required

$75/teacher; free for members of the Montshire STEM Alliance
Pre-registration is required two weeks prior to workshop to allow for shipping of materials
