Balancing Structures
(Virtual Family Science Workshop)

Take part in 90-minute family workshops for children 6-12 years old and their caregivers. Even extended families in multiple locations can participate!

During the workshop, a Museum Educator will lead learners through activities via Zoom. Each workshop will cover a unique science topic.

Turn everyday objects and toys into beautifully balancing artworks! Play and science are perfect partners to help us explore balance and stability as we engineer kinetic sculptures.

You can make almost anything balance. Below are some suggested types of materials, yet we encourage you to bring some fun materials and your imaginations!

Materials Needed:

  • Pencil
  • Something heavy in/on which you can attach a pencil (e.g. pen in a jar of rice, half of a potato or apple, etc.)
  • Connectors like wire, tape, cardboard, binder clips buttons, corks, etc.
  • Objects of different weights and shapes like forks, spoons, washers, feathers, blocks, twigs, etc.
  • Scissors
  • Hole-making tool (e.g. hole punch, drill, nail, sharpened pencil)
