Weaving Strands of Knowledge: Connecting Culture and Science to Climate Change
Shivaraj Bhattarai, PhD., Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan.
Dr. Bhattarai is the Dean at the premier Royal Thimphu College (RTC). A native of Bhutan, Dr. Bhattarai has an M.Sc. in Bio-Science and a Ph.D. in Limnology (Freshwater Ecology). Before joining RTC in 2008, he was the Dean of Academic Affairs and the faculty member in Sherubtse College (the lone premier university college in Bhutan) for over 17 years.He taught Bio-Science including courses such as Applied Entomology, Developmental Biology,Evolution, Cell Biology and Aquatic Ecology. During his teaching tenure he also carried out dozens of individual and group research projects involving extensive field visits throughout Bhutan. He also has over a dozen research publications, including articles in peer reviewed international journals to his credit. Currently he heads the Academic Department of the Royal Thimphu College and is the memberrepresentative of the college to the Academic Board of the Royal University of Bhutan. He is involvedin curriculum design and development, the most recent being the development of new undergraduateBSC Environmental Management program that is seen as the flagship program of the RTC. He is therecipient of several awards including the most recently received prestigious Life Time Service Award(Gold) for Dedicated Service from His Majesty the King for his long service in teaching, research andeducational leadership in the higher education sector in Bhutan.
