Volunteer Opportunities at Montshire

Montshire volunteers help with a wide range of activities, some working on a weekly schedule, others working on an occasional basis or on specific events. Some work with our visiting public, others work behind the scenes. While specific needs vary throughout the year, here are descriptions about ongoing volunteer positions.

Program Volunteers
Explainers interact with visitors, demonstrating exhibits and
informal science activities; make presentations with our exhibits.
Initial and ongoing monthly training from Museum education staff,
very little daily staff supervision. Strong interest in working with
children and visitors, and ability to work independently essential.
Time commitment: 3 hours/week.
Museum Preschool volunteers assist the staff teacher in the weekly
Museum Preschool for 4- and 5-year old children. A love of little
kids and ease in sitting on the floor are the key requirements. Time
commitment: 3 hours/week (Wednesdays) during the school year.

Exhibits Volunteers
Design and research volunteers take on tasks, under the supervision of Montshire's exhibits curator, involving initial planning and library research for new or revised exhibits. Time committment: varies.
Production and repairs volunteers work with Museum staff in building, painting, maintaining and fixing exhibits. Experience with carpentry, power tools and machinery very helpful. Time committment: weekly or monthly.
Trails and landscaping volunteers help with annual trail maintenance and special plantings or clean-ups. Time commitment: 4-6 hours on occasional basis.

Museum Operations and Fundraising
Office volunteers work with Museum staff behind-the-scenes on a
variety of tasks, depending on their skills and interests.
Possibilities include: answering the phone, mailings, public
relations projects. Time commitment: varies.
Auction volunteers handle a wide variety of jobs for this important
annual (May) event, including asking for donations from businesses
and individuals, decorations and set-up, and helping on Auction
night. Time commitment: up to 4-6 hours/week during January to May.
Magic Carpet volunteers organize a popular series of monthly
luncheons (October-March) that feature guest speakers and regional
menus. Volunteers line up the speakers, select appropriate menus,
prepare the food at home, set-up and serve at the Museum, and
coordinate reservations. Time commitment: 6-10 hours/luncheon.
