Welcome to the Montshire!

The Montshire is open 7 days a week, from 10am to 5pm.

No reservations are needed to visit.


The Museum can be crowded on rainy days, Saturdays, and holidays. Late afternoons tend to be quieter. Please choose to visit according to what is most comfortable for you.

All visitors, including members and those only visiting outdoors areas, need to check in at the Museum’s Admissions Desk. Click here for information about admission fees.

Adult supervision is required for all visitors under the age of 13.

General Admission
  • $20 for adults
  • $17 for children 2–17
  • Free for members and children under 2 years of age.

The Montshire does not have reciprocity with other museums and institutions. Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult when on museum property.

The museum is open on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Administrative offices are closed.

The museum is closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Military Discount

$2 off general admission for US military service members, veterans, and their families. Limit 6 visitors.

Warm Welcome

$3 admission for VT or NH residents with EBT card, adult Medicaid card, or free/reduced price school meals letter. Limit 6 visitors.

Two-Day Pass

This pass offers two days of admission to the Montshire. The second museum visit must happen 10 days after the first visit.

General Admission: September through May

  • $27 for adult two-day pass
  • $22.50 for children two-day pass (ages 2–17)

Summer Admission: June through September

  • $31 for adult two-day pass
  • $26.50 for children two-day pass (ages 2–17)

The Montshire’s address is 1 Montshire Road, Norwich, VT 05055. Free parking is available at the Museum.

The Museum is conveniently located just off Interstate 91 at Exit 13 (look for the “Museum of Science” signs) in Norwich, Vermont, five miles north of White River Junction. The Museum is directly across the Connecticut River from Hanover, New Hampshire, home of Dartmouth College.

Public transportation options are available via Advance Transit buses, which stop at the top of Montshire Road each weekday (except major holidays). Advance Transit riders should plan for a five-minute walk from the bus stop to the Museum entrance.

  • Eating and drinking in permitted in the Snack Zone.
  • It is our expectation that adults attend children at all times.
  • No pets, except service animals, are permitted in the building or on the trails.
  • Smoking is only permitted in the Montshire parking lot.
  • Please be respectful and considerate of all others when visiting the Montshire.
  • Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult when on museum property.
  • The museum grounds are available to members and non-members alike during the Museum’s open business hours. Please refrain from visiting Science Park and the trails when the Museum is not open.

Visit Only if Healthy

Museum visitors must show no symptoms of illness. Visitors must not enter the Montshire building or grounds if they are unwell or experiencing any symptoms of illness.

Face Coverings and Masks

Masks are encouraged, but not required.

Practice Healthy Hand Hygiene

We ask that all visitors wash their hands or use hand sanitizer upon entry and frequently throughout their visit. We have increased the availability of hand-washing and hand-sanitizing stations throughout our building and grounds.

Stay Together with Your Group

Visitor groups should stay together. Children must stay with their adults at all times.

Pay for admission when you check in. We accept all major credit cards, cash, and checks (no Apple/Google pay).

If You Are a Social Service Partner

Please bring the laminated Social Service pass your organization was issued, or a photocopy of the pass. If you need to make other arrangements to use your pass, please contact the Visitor Services manager.

At the Admissions Desk, let us know you are here to shop at the Museum Store and we will admit you at no charge. If you are a member, we will still check you in by scanning your Member card. Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult when in the store.

The Anderson Center is the Montshire’s new community space, designed to offer a more accessible and inclusive experience.

Celebrate the 2024 Solar Eclipse with two days at the Montshire!

Solar Eclipse Activity Days!

Sunday, April 7th, 2024

Enjoy a day at the Montshire and learn about the total solar eclipse with hands-on activities and timed StarLab* sessions throughout the day! Purchase eclipse glasses in the Montshire Museum Store.

Monday, April 8th, 2024

10:30am-1:30pm:

Make pinhole viewers and other activities, timed StarLab* sessions.

2-4:30pm:

Outdoor viewing of the solar eclipse.

*StarLab is the Montshire’s inflatable portable planetarium. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Front Desk. In this immersive experience, you will learn about the eclipse, stars, constellations, and planets! Limited spaces available for timed sessions. First come, first served, $3 extra per person with admission or membership (no advanced sales). Please note that StarLab takes place in a dark, enclosed space, with seating on the floor. The program lasts approximately 20 minutes.
