Summer Positions 2008

The Montshire Museum of Science offers extensive summer environmental and science day camp programming for children and also hosts many summer visitors. The Museum hires approximately 20 day camp educators and explainers each summer.

Summer Camp 2008 Camp Positions:

Directors: Requires experience teaching the appropriate age range, supervisory experience, background in ecology or environmental education, and excitement in exploring the natural world with children. Oversees program quality and provides guidance in program development. Supervises and provides leadership for 2-3 staff and interns. Serves as lead liaison with parents. Monitors budget, materials, medical problems, parent and staff concerns, and provides feedback. Leads daily staff debriefing. Shares teaching responsibilities with other educators.

Educators: Requires informal teaching experience with the appropriate age-range children and excitement in exploring the natural world with children. Develops and leads camp program with other staff. Facilitates explorations, games, solo times, and large and small group activities.

Interns: Requires someone eager to gain informal teaching experience and excited about exploring the natural world with children. Interns work alongside more experienced staff in planning and teaching the program.

CPR and First Aid certification required for all camp positions.

All hires are subject to a criminal background check.


 

Preschool Camp (ages 4-5)

Each day the campers explore a special outdoor place with stories, songs, movement, live creatures, explorations, and activities. The day starts with a story that has been written specifically for the program. Educators have the opportunity to create a new story. Morning and afternoon sessions, with 12 children and 3 adult educators.

1. Director, Preschool Camp (1 position)
Dates: June 11 - August 15
Hours: M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Salary: $400-450/week

2. Environmental Educator, Preschool Camp (1-2 positions)
Dates: June 12-August 15
Hours: M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Salary: $340-380/week

3. Preschool Camp Intern (1 position)
Dates: June 12 - August 15
Hours: M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Salary: $300-320/week or, if eligible, work study to be set at an hourly rate
Housing: may be available, please note in your application whether housing is needed


 

Outdoor Discovery Camp (grades 1-2)

Environmentally-oriented day camp with outdoor adventures, solo times, friendship, crafts, science activities, stories, games, explorations and swimming. An imaginative story line is developed around an ecological theme to shape the program. Each day includes large and small group activities. Offered at the Montshire and another local site. Fifteen to 21 children with 3-4 adult educators. Lifeguard certification (paid for by the Montshire) is required for two staff.

Dates: June 11-August 15
Hours: M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., plus staff meeting Wed., 4-6 p.m.
Salary: $400-450/week

2. Environmental Educator, Outdoor Discovery Camp (4-5 positions)
Dates: June 12-August 15
Hours: M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., plus staff meeting Wed., 4-6 p.m.
Salary: $340-380/week

3. Outdoor Discovery Camp Intern (1-2 positions)
Dates: June 12 - August 15
Hours: M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. plus staff meeting Wed., 4-6 p.m.
Salary: $300-320/week or, if eligible, work study to be set at an hourly rate

Extended Care Option

The Montshire offers a supervised unstructured extended care option for children in the museum following camp. Children ages 6 to 12 (mostly ages 6-9). Requires babysitting experience, communication skills with parents and museum staff, and working independently

1. Extended Option Supervisor (2 positions)
Dates: June 23 - August 15 plus pre-camp training (to be scheduled)
Hours: M-F, 2:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.
Salary: $9.25-9.50/hour

 

Summer Museum Explainers

An excellent opportunity to gain experience in museum interpretation and inquiry science methods. The job offers formal and informal teaching opportunities in the physical and natural sciences. Exhibits include: Bubbles, Leafcutter Ants, AirPlay, Reptiles, Fresh Water Aquarium, Mind Games, and outdoor Science Park. Explainers host visitors and enhance their learning, offer assistance and inquiry-provoking questions about the exhibits, facilitate daily experiments and activities, and provide basic maintenance of many exhibits. Requires an interest in both physical science and natural history, the ability to work with visitors of various backgrounds and ages, and to be on your feet for most of the day. CPR and First Aid certification required.

1. Summer Exhibit Explainer (4-5 positions)
Dates: May-early September (1-2 positions), mid June-late August (3-4 positions)
Staff Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., 25-37.5 hrs/week including weekends
Salary: $9.00-10.00/hour
