Science Education
The Montshire education department serves school groups and the public through programs at the museum, outreach, and interaction on the exhibit floor. Programs focus on natural and physical sciences and serve a wide range of ages from preschool through adult. Education interns will have the opportunity to teach science concepts to preschoolers and school children, to develop activities for kids and families, to interpret exhibits, and to assist with special events. Candidates should have an interest in informal education, an interest in working with children and the public, and be excited by science.
If you are interested in a summer internship in Science Education, please contact us, as there are some important differences in the program.
Exhibit Design and Fabrication
Montshire has some 15,000 feet of exhibit space, inside and outside, filled with interactive science exhibits. The exhibits department creates exhibits that are meant to appeal to children and families as well as adults, and they are designed for visitors with a wide variety of knowledge and life experiences, and for a range of cognitive and physical abilities. Exhibits cover many aspects of the physical and natural sciences, with a special focus on local and native flora and fauna. Interns are exposed to most every aspect of exhibit production that takes place here, including research, design, and production of exhibits, installation of any scheduled traveling exhibitions, and day-to-day repair and maintenance, and participate in the exhibit planning and evaluation process. Candidates should have an interest in science, good manual skills, and basic computer skills; familiarity with the Adobe graphic design suite of software is helpful. In addition, imagination, a sense of humor, and an enjoyment of problem solving are necessary.
Public Relations and Marketing
As Montshire continues to be recognized as an important learning center and tourist attraction in the region, public relations uses creativity and research to introduce the Museum to all potential audiences. Interns will have the chance to work in the various avenues of communications, including research and writing copy for advertisements and features. Interns may also be involved with technical aspects of the trade, including photography, desktop publishing, and graphics.
